4 Stars real shapes real sizes
I think this book had a lot of good information in it but I wish that it had more examples of food menues.

2 Stars Watch out if you have other Jorge’s books
This book and Jorge’s 8 “Minutes in the Morning for Extra-Easy Weight Loss” are almost word-for-word the same book! Not real impressive that an author would do this, not to mention a publisher (Harper Collins). I already had the “8 Minute” book and thought this would be a great addition. I was very dissapointed…

1 Star about food, not exercise.
even if you are under a time constraint, if you have beem exercising for a while this book will do nothing for you. I must admit I haven’t even tried the book exercises in the book even once, but I knew that doing the exercises in the book, would not make me feel as though I’ve exercised. If you don’t have time to exercise, but you do exercise regularly, and want to get your heart rate up, get the 8 minute tae bo workout.

For obese people, or someone who likes to stretch and take it really easy, this book is for you. But its more to do with eating, that actual exercising.

3 Stars very basic, but good food plan
I need to lose 40 pounds so I ordered 3 Hour Diet and this book. The other book was good for me. This one is for someone who has never exercised and doesn’t really want to exercise and just wants guidelines on how to eat. It does have high quality laminated, plasticky pages, (not newsprint) and that was nice. You can almost use it as a coffee table book. It also goes on endlessly about getting a support system of phone call friends, email friends, and just friends period to alert that you are undergoing this new plan and need help. I, for one can’t do that, so I knew this was not the book for me. I was lucky to get my husband to not roll his eyes when he saw I was yet again trying something new.

3 Stars Not bad, but not for me.
If you are completely desperate and need something really basic to follow, this is a good book. I’m overweight but these exercises were just too easy and I didn’t feel challenged enough. I opted to start weight watchers and use some exercise videos instead. I did enjoy the book and it is very motivational if you want to start fresh.

Before and After Revised Edition Living and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery

At 278 pounds, Susan Maria Leach couldn’t lie in bed without gasping for air, wasn’t able to fit into a restaurant booth, and could barely buckle the belt in an airplane seat. It would have been easier to allow life to pass her by than to continue fighting her weight problem, but she made the difficult decision to take back control. In 2001, Susan underwent gastric bypass surgery and started on a journey that would not only cut her body weight in half but would change her life.

Before & After is both a memoir and a cookbook—an intimate account of Leach’s own transformation as well as a guide for those who have undergone or are considering the procedure. As Leach has learned in the six years since her operation, weight-loss surgery is not an event with a finish line or a goal weight—it is the beginning of a new way of life.

This edition of Before & After has been updated with all that Leach has learned on her post-op journey. It includes a foreword by Leach’s surgeon, advice from a nutritionist, answers to more frequently asked questions about weight-loss surgery, a whole chapter on meal plans for different post-operative stages, suggested menus for early food stages, additional questions and answers affecting longer-term post-ops, and new information about products that have entered the marketplace.

Most notably, this edition showcases a wealth of new recipes that utilize the latest in light and healthy ingredients for smart and savory results, including everything from Asian Meatballs with Peanut Sauce and Turkey Tenderloin with Apple Chipotle Chutney to sugar-free Pistachio Gelato and Lemon Almond Sponge Cake. Each recipe makes about four servings, but includes a measured serving for WLS people along with a calorie/carb/fat/protein count. Leach has recipes for every step of the way, from tastes-like-the-real-thing milk shakes for those first post-op days to an entire Thanksgiving menu.

Before & After is a journal of Leach’s own inspirational story, where she shares her ups and downs, her tips and techniques, but mostly it’s a book of hope for anyone who has a serious weight problem.

5 Stars Full of practical advice for RNY patients
In anticipation of my RNY (roux-en-y gastric bypass) surgery, I bought several books on the subject. I read them all. Then I had my surgery and realized how little I had learned about how to deal with the post-op regime on a day-to-day basis. My sweet mother-in-law sent me “Before & After” as a late Christmas present, and it made all the difference. Susan lays it all out for you, i.e., what you need to do every day to create weight loss and good health using the TOOL (not the panacea) that is gastric bypass surgery. I am not far enough along in the post-op process to be eating solid food, so I haven’t tried any of her recipes, but they sound fantastic. [To be fair, she also offers recipe suggestions for the liquid/soft diet stages; I have just been too preoccupied to try them, either.] In response to those reviewers who were offended by Susan’s references to having lots of money to spend, yes, she does talk about eating at four-star restaurants and buying nice clothes, but she doesn’t come across as elitist. She just enjoys the good life … who doesn’t? Give her a break. Her husband’s money seems to have been derived from Florida real estate, so I would not be surprised if she is suffering in this recession at least as much as the rest of us. Does that make you feel better?

1 Star Yes it is that bad!
When I first read the good and bad review I thought “I can’t be that bad” but it is!.

I am really disappointed with this book. It’s like she is still in denial about why she needed the RNY in the first place not just the weight but the psychological reasons. She never goes into why she gained the weight. I am not interested in which celebrities got the WLS.

I bought this book hoping to get some REAL insight of what it does to you physically and emotionally. I got sick of reading how she goes out and has a wonderful time shopping at Macy’s, eating a special sugar free cheesecake especially prepared for her. After 30 pages I was really wondering if people where endorsing her to mention all the brand names, because I am sure it is important to put in your diary for which car manufacturer you brother works for and that not just any pair of jeans didn’t fit but the ones from DNKY. God forbid she actually wrote that she was actually feeling, it’s like super perky Barbie.

This book is superficial and bland, lacking emotion it feels like a bad tv commercial IMO.

Believe it or not you’ll actually find better WLS experiences on youtube.

5 Stars Great Book
I’ve been contemplating GBS for a few years now and bought this book back then. I’ve read it now and find it very informative and the recipes that she has provided will be great for me post op. That’s the time that I worry about the most - what to ingest, when to ingest it, and how to take care of myself without screwing this up. It’s well written, logical and gives plenty of food options.

5 Stars Do not have the surgery without reading this wonderful book
This book is the real deal - tells you the good and bad. I really enjoyed it - read the whole book in one day! I am convinced this is the right path for me - I am so glad I am in the program at in Rochester NY

4 Stars Recommend for WLS patients
This book was an easy read and has the experiences of a WLS patient goes through before and after surgery and an example of the ‘dumping’ episode one hears about pre-surgery. I have travelled internationally extensively in my career and I fully understand what the Author is saying about her great travels, eating, spending etc. and because she can do them now as before she felt prohibited to do so, she inturns shares her experiences. I didn’t take this as a ‘look at how great I am’ book, rather a look at life and your eating life after surgery. Her receipes look easy and most ingrediants can be purchased at your store. It is not a surprise that the author has a website of product one can purchase. I do find them extremely high in price and the average income person would only be able to afford a few items.
