Dr. Kleiner is a leading nutrition authority on eating for strength who has put together a diet that has already been successfully tested in a Seattle weight-loss group and documented in a series by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. This book proves that you can choose healthy foods that both make you feel great and, when eaten according to the plan, help you lose weight. Most diets cause chemical changes in the brain that make the dieter feel depressed. The typical plan is often too low in calories. In THE GOOD MOOD DIET the participants eat feel-good foods with both ideal timing and ideal combinations–a balance of protein and fats to go with carbohydrates. Eating from a list of “feel-good foods,” including fish, flax seed and eggs, and eliminating “feel-bad foods” including refined sugar, helps dieters feel better and lose weight. However, sweets and alcohol are not taboo–eating a bit of chocolate and drinking a glass of red wine a day is okay once you’re two weeks into the diet.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A good high protein diet
The authors recommend 10 servings of protein a day; and that makes this a high protein diet: not overly high but high. Check with your MD to see how many servings are safe for you if you are a woman as wrist fractures increase for women consuming over 8 ounces of protein a day, according to a major female nurse study–however, you may be able to consume more, safely, if you are obese. The foods recommended are proven to improve mood. The high protein helps promote satiety so you won’t feel hungry. It’s nice to have proven combinations of foods spelled out and placed into daily menus. Great little book!

5 Stars A diet that delivers on it’s promise
The Good Mood Diet really does help to balance your moods - it was as if eating the recommended foods simply erased my tendency toward irritability and anxiety. I was a little concerned when my weight did not go down right away, as that was also what I was looking for, but it just took a few weeks for my metabolism to speed up and then everything was good. The book is quite detailed. Very much to learn, but it WORKS! Also, there is a website with a chat group to get support and ask questions which is very helpful. Also, if it seems overwhelming at first, it’ll get much easier to do without checking off a list in just a couple of weeks. Definitely recommend this book. May not be the fastest weight loss plan, but the healthiest physically and emotionally. Go buy it!

5 Stars Good Mood lifestyle.
This book is great! The diet is simple and easy to follow, and the book is written in such a real manner. I got what Dr. Kleiner has to say and it just makes sense. I sleep better, have more energy in the day time, and have had a lot of fun with the smoothy recipes.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to make a positive change in their life and get a fresh start!

Michelle.

2 Stars First purchase
As good as the link described this book, i was disappointed to find that it wasnt relevant to me in the way it had said. A somewhat older style fad book, although having good suggestions, is not for someone 27 living in Australia from a different era’.

4 Stars Great book
this book is truly a great read and I would suggest it to anyone. I now incorporate the daily foods the book suggests into my diet including a cup of hot cocoa nightly before bed. It really does soothe your body. I also noticed instant improvements in my mood after a couple of days. This book is not really about dieting, it’s about eating right to feel good, which is a major plus. My mom is currently reading this book! Thank you.

If you are struggling to lose weight, you are in good company; millions of people around the globe are fighting an uphill battle in the weight loss war as well.

Interestingly, in some parts of the world, there are people who stay trim and healthy well into old age and beyond. They are not plagued by many of the diseases that affect people in industrialized areas of the world, and they do not suffer many of the aging related diseases that people in Western countries suffer as they age.

Scientists have studied the diets and lifestyle of these cultures, and diet is believed to play a hugely important role in their longevity and physical health.

A large portion of the foods that are available today in grocery stores are presented to us in a form that was never available to our ancestors: refined carbohydrates that have been stripped of any nutritional benefits.

The breads, cereals, cakes, rolls, muffins and donuts that are stacked on the grocery store shelves and piled high in display cases are …

Now you can find your inner thinner chick with the exercise, diet, and image secrets of the most enviable bodies

.

In The Secrets of Skinny Chicks, award-winning women’s health journalist Karen Bridson profiles 25 svelte women–including models, actors, athletes and regular folks–to reveal exactly what it is each one does to look so great. These women share with you their tips for planning menus, exercising, and staying motivated as well as advice on boosting metabolism. You will learn how to adapt these secrets into your own life safely and realistically.

.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star The Secret of Skinny Chicks
I found this book deeply disappointing - especially the ‘Meet the Skinny Chicks Part’. I am a full time working mother and if I make it to the gym three times a week for 45′ a go I consider myself lucky. Most of the profiles are based on actresses, models or super-models who have the time and the ability to spend seven days a week and two to three hours per day exercising. I do not have that privilege and I know many, many others who feel the same. The majority of the examples cited are not ‘real people’ and, therefore, should not have made it in a book addressed to the general public.

4 Stars Interesting Information
Despite the somewhat obnoxious title, I enjoyed reading this book and think it has a lot of interesting ideas packed into its 273 pages. It profiles the typical daily diet and weekly exercise routines of 21 so-called `Skinny Chicks’ ranging from US dress size 2 to 8 (the UK equivalent of size 6 to 12). After this, the author describes the 50 `secrets’ of these women, going into more detail about how they keep slim and fit.

As expected, the advice given is pretty much standard healthy eating stuff. Count calories. Bulk out meals with vegetables and salad. Drink lots of water. Learn positive self talk. Although I suppose I have been doing some of these things already, it was still useful to read the ideas in print and pick up a few extra tips along the way.

It was actually the exercise information that I found most refreshing. Personally speaking, I’ve found a real passion for working out at the gym - and in this regard I agree with the author that developing a ‘healthy addiction’ for exercise is an excellent way to lose weight, and it doesn’t seem like a chore because you’re getting so much out of it and feel so good.

Overall, the book is a good read for anybody with an interest in health and fitness, but I would still caution people not to take the advice to the extreme. The book does go on about calories a lot, and at one point I had to put it aside because I was becoming obsessed with counting calories. Also, I have a bit of a problem with the term ‘Skinny Chick’ being held up as the ideal in the first place. I do not want to be ’skinny’ (a word which brings to mind skin and bone). I want to be fit, healthy and reasonably toned. Make sure you feel confident about your body and where you’re heading before you read this book, so you don’t fall into the trap of always striving to be thinner.

5 Stars This book motivated me!
I have read this book twice in the last couple months and it motivates me.

A lot of the info. is stuff we already know (as I have read almost every diet book under the Sun and then some) but it was written in a fresh way. I really like this author. I want to get her running book now as I am a runner and would like to read more books by her.

Some of the info. is extreme exercise 2 hours a day and eat 1600 cals a day or less to be a size 2. But she also says you do what you are comfortable with. If you want to be a size 10 it is unlikely you need to workout that much and eat so little. It is up to you. I for one cannot work out that much and eat so little. Not gonna happen and I am not an actress so do I really need to do anything that extreme??? But I still love the book. It is very interesting, with a few things I did not know and written very well and it motivates me to run more and eat a little less. So I am pleased and would recommend to those who like reading books with diet tips and such and like to workout a lot or are willing to be open to the idea of really increasing their exercise. I am still working on the food issue…I like to eat!

1 Star Diet Tips from Anna Rexic
Skip this book, unless you truly want a lifestyle of never enjoying your food again and plan to work out for a minimum of two hours every day for the rest of your life. “Useful” tips include Exercise More! Eat Less! Become Vegetarian! Keep a Food Journal! Eat Protein Bars & Shakes instead of Food!

If you are considering or struggling with your latest diet and haven’t read it, I seriously recommend anybody out there try reading Dana Carpender’s “dieting memoir” How I Gave Up My Low-Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds (Revised and Expanded Edition). You just might see a little of yourself in Dana’s description of her weight struggle, (I know I certainly did!) and her eventual “AHA!” moment when she realized that it wasn’t fat that was making HER fat. I found her story very enlightening.

And if you are a lover of fine food like I am, who doesn’t wish to beat herself up but would like to look a little trimmer, another fine pick with a lot of continental charm is French Women Don’t Get Fat: The Secret of Eating For Pleasure. This is book that speaks of the joys of fresh fruit ripening on the kitchen counter (with the smell wafting through the house) and the pleasures of buying seasonal produce from the farmer’s market (among other French eating habits). Great recipes in this one. Sensible & lyrical, this one is a joy to read even if you don’t plan to diet.

Both of these are much better choices.

4 Stars Good Book
Book was insiteful on “what skinny chicks do” to keep healthy.

Recommend for anyone looking for a lifestyle change, and needing some hints on how to do it.

Get ready to discover a totally new way to think about weight control– a system that virtually guarantees success!

Years of working with overweight men and women has convinced weight-loss expert Cathy Nonas that there’s only one surefire way to lose weight and keep it off. And it isn’t dieting.

It’s learning to use tools– small, yet ingenious tips, tricks, and techniques that help keep your eating and exercise habits on track– no matter what diet you’re on. Here, Cathy reveals more than 200 tools “road-tested” by her thousands of clients that will help you eat smarter, get and stay active, and break through self-destructive thinking patterns and behaviors that have sabotaged your weight-control efforts in the past.

You’ll also find:

* The Eating Assessment Test (EAT), which helps you decipher your eating style and discover the patterns and pitfalls that stand in the way of having a slimmer, healthier body.
* The Top 40 Diet Danger Zones– the traps and pitfalls that typically cause us to abandon our weight-control programs.
* Worksheets and quizzes throughout the book that allow you to think about weight loss from your own perspective.

4 Stars Not for the faint of heart
I agree with the 5 star reviews that this is the best weight loss book now on the market. My reservation is that this is therapy. You must be prepared to be completely honest with yourself, to journal about your feelings, and your relationship to food, and how and why you got in the fix you’re in. The book opened a real can of worms for me, and did so for my sister, and neither of us was prepared to go so deeply into the issues. I guess that’s why previous diets have failed us! If one is truly ready to do the work, this book is the only tool you will ever need. The approach is encouraging and gentle, but the emotional baggage that comes up can be difficult. I think this book would be most safely used in a support group.

5 Stars Great book filled with great tips!
This was the first weight/diet related book I ever read and it had quite an impact on me. This book offers useful information about how to eat and usefull tips on how to control impulses to overeat. I’m not saying that this book is the end-all to diet books but it has many helpfull tips and tidbits that can help anyone learn to eat a little healthier.

5 Stars Finally! A weight loss plan that works for ANYONE!
This is one of the best weight loss books I’ve ever read (and I’ve read them all). It is clear and well-written, non-gimmicky, with great tips for every situation. If you want to lose weight and you think you’ve tried everything, this book is for you.

5 Stars Registered Dietitian from San Antonio
This is a wonderful book. It contains the most current research in the field of weight management in a format lay people can easily understand. Cathy, very courageously, does not offer a quick fix. She over and over demystifies the weight loss experience, and honors how difficult it is to change behavior and keep it changed. The overeating stories are an absolute hoot! I know I will recommend it to my clients and use it for myself.

5 Stars Great source of weight loss information!
How do you battle weight loss and maintenance? In her book “Outwit you Weight” Cathy Nonas provides 200 tools and tips to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

If you, like many people are concerned with the way you look and feel, this book will provide you many answers. In addition to tools, Cathy breaks down danger zones and physical fitness using real live examples. Healthy recipes are also provided.

“Outwit your Weight” is easy to read, well organized and full of facts and tips. Reading this book is like having a weight loss program at your fingertips. Definitely recommend.

Diabetes Burnout is an interactive book that addresses the emotional issues that contribute to poor glycemic control and provides guidance to overcoming the barriers to good self-care. Worksheets help readers assess their current state of motivation and establish a successful plan of action.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars The best I’ve found
After six years of managing the health aspects of diabetes well, I never could deal with the emotional aspects. Every day was like a spelling test I flunked even though I knew the words. This book taught me about accepting ‘less than perfect’ blood glucose numbers. Now maybe I can relax and stop beating myself up with guilt and worry, something that also makes things worse. This book has wonderful questionaires and evaluations that really help narrow down the reader’s needs then offers concrete steps to help overcome whatever aspect is a problem in diabetes care. I will recommend this book to my friends who ask about diatetes.

Thanks.

2 Stars More Burned Out!
I read this book, hoping it would be written on an adult level. It is not. It is patronizing and condescending toward those diabetics like myself who have lived with the disease for many years. I was diagnosed 61 years ago and still need help with the stress and anger associated with a difficult life. Yes, I know how to manage my disease. I would not have survived this long had I not had good self-management skills. Yes, I have had both counseling and been put on antidepressants. In spite of what is going well in my life with diabetes, I still scored poorly on every test! Unbelievable, so now I am feeling worse than when I started the book. I think the book is geared for those who need lots of help within a few years of diagnosis. It is of no use for those of us in this for the long haul who need more than the same old solutions and are apparently worse off than we had ever dreamed!

5 Stars The single most important book for Diabetics to read
The first think that is important to point out that while Diabetes Burnout is published by the lobbying group the represents the interests of those who PROFIT from Diabetes, not those afflicted, THAT Dr. William H. Polonsky, DOESN’T REPRESENT THE ADA, at all and the book wasn’t written for the ADA.

Dr. Polonsky however started a clinic in California to help psychological issues of the grind of maintaining glucose levels as well as trains and lectures doctors from all over the globe to STOP BLAMING THE DIABETIC for the challenges and changes in dealing with Diabetes.

Heck, after reading Diabetes Burnout, it was the first time I ever have had it acknowledged that my feelings that are natural about the challenge of ATTEMPTING to manage my Diabetes are natural and not some sign of weakness.

Understand that the book was published in 1999 (I think), where there are some changes in the understanding of Diabetes and choices.

I agree that the book is not perfect and that a few parts of it seem a little simplistic on working through the psychological issues dealing with the attempt to manage diabetes.

But I would give it 10 stars if I could. It is the first and best book of its kind and Dr Polonsky does GREAT work on this subject. I have spoken to him because, I am immediately be suspicious of anything that comes out of the ADA. Dr Polonsky has never worked for, been paid by or been sponsored by the ADA. The publishing arm of the ADA just saw that they might make some money as publishers of the book.

Just look at the 238 million received by the ADA last year and look at their funding sources. The ADA posts their “Golden Circle”, those are entities that have given them over a million dollars in a year. Then look at those in the 500,000 group, etc. As you will see, the funds are from Large Pharm, Insurance companies and Cadbury Schweps (sugar loaded candy and soda). Understand that the money they receive and spend on “research”, just goes back to those in their “Golden Circle”.

5 Stars Life-saving psychological help with diabetes challenges
With diabetes, there is no walking away from the difficulties of the illnes; it can’t be laid aside when the going gets tough. This great book helps look at and deal with the everyday difficulties that are real parts of living with diabetes. Dr. Polonsky is like a friend who understands and furthermore, has good suggestions for how to handle what you feel you can’t live with any more. Great tone, helpful information, comforting message. Great book!

5 Stars Diabetes Burnout
EXCELLENT book for those living with diabetes. Diabetes burnout is very common. This book is full of tips, suggestions, and even tests, to help you in dealing with diabetes.

The authors of the runaway bestseller Win the Fat War show moms how to shape up and win the battle against postpartum padding.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Not a lot of help, but still good…
This book wasn’t really a book giving a lot of guidlines on losing postpregnancy pounds, it was just a bunch of stories about moms that lost weight. There were some great stories, but a lot of the stuff was common sense. I wouldn’t recommend this as a weight loss tool, but rather as a good motivational book to get going on the weight loss.

1 Star Where’s the helpful information?
This book didn’t have much specific, practical advice- I mean, everyone knows that if you eat fewer calories and exercise more you’ll lose weight, right? Some people must find it motivating to read 100 stories stories about other people losing weight, but I don’t have a lot of time on my hands and prefer to get the main points without all the fluff in between. (Every case study went something like, “Janeane ate a lot while she was pregnant and gained 30 pounds. After having the baby, she ate less and exercised more and lost the weight!” No duh!)

4 Stars What a great book!
I really enjoyed reading this book. After my second pregnancy, my husband bought me this book because he knew I wanted to lose some weight. I found the book very inspiring. It gave me a lot of wonderful ideas, everyday things that I can do to get rid of those postpregnancy pounds. The most wonderful thing about it is that they are interviews with mothers just like us, who did it. It talks about the quality of the food we eat, the importance of exercise, the need to relie on friends and family, and thousands of little tips to help us through it. And it is useful the minute you find out that you are pregnant because there’s a whole section on the pregnancy itself. When I became pregnant the first time, I was already overweight, so the pregnancies are not entirely the reason why I wanted to lose weight. This is why I’m looking to buy the mother book WIN THE FAT WAR. I’m sure I can learn things from that book too.
Believe me, you will not regret buying this book.

Created for the dieter who would rather follow science than the latest fad or celebrity, this book synthesizes years of research to present one dependable weight loss plan that really works. Using a combination of consistently proven diet and exercise strategies that require no special props or aids, readers are shown reliable ways to get weight off and keep it off. Information on calculating calorie needs, determining BMI (body mass index), and working out percentages of fats, carbs, and proteins in a diet are offered. The author leaves nothing to hypothesis, giving the truth about cellulite and how to tell when one’s weight is a health risk. Fact is better than fiction where successful weight-loss is concerned and this book delivers all the scientific findings concisely in a convenient format.

4 Stars Good book
This book is a very quick read and made some of the connections between diet and exercise very clear. I have loaned it to a lot of friends and they like it too.

4 Stars Well Researched, Well Written, but Incomplete
This is a quick and interesting read that is worth buying because it’s well researched and has some valuable insights. On the other hand, the author is a good researcher, but he’s not a nutrition specialist, so he doesn’t address some finer points that would increase success. I suggest also reading The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan, written by a nutrition researcher, for additional information.

4 Stars Excellent - straight to the point.
Excellent book and an easy read. Just received it yesterday afternoon and already finished it. It is straight and to the point and not filled with a lot of extra fluff. Looking forward to putting the information into practice.

5 Stars it really is no-nonsense!
there’s nothing fake about this book. Just the facts! If your skeptical about fad diets, or if your program will really help you lose weight AND keep it off, then this book is for you!!

Johnson has definitely done his research and sites many, many, MANY case studies to prove what works, what doesn’t, and what doesn’t make a difference which way you do it.

One of the best things about this book is each chapter has a summary. This is GREAT after you’ve read it, and you just want a quick refresher, or a boost of motivation or inspiration.

I also bought Johnson’s 60 second motivator. The 2 go nicely together, but if i had to pick one, it would be this book. Besides which, there is a chapter in this book that reads very similar to the 60 second motivator anyway!

5 Stars Great book, simple and direct
I got alot out of this book..very simple and direct.

If you struggle with losing weight, or if you lose weight but always gain it back, it is important for you to read this book. Losing weight is not just about dieting or exercising as proved by the countless number of failed diets and exercise programs. First, you need to identify and let go of the many Mental, Emotional, Subconscious, and Spiritual blocks, also called M.E.S.S. blocks that prevent you from losing weight. These blocks are the limiting beliefs, thoughts, or fears that prevent your weight loss. Fat No More includes approximately 888 M.E.S.S. blocks to weight loss. If you do not let go of these M.E.S.S. blocks, you will continue to have an extremely hard time losing weight and, if you do succeed, you will gain the weight back. The focus of Fat No More is to help you identify and let go of your own M.E.S.S. blocks to weight loss.

Hemochromatosis is one of modern medicine’s greatest oversights. An inherited metabolic iron disorder, it is most common in people of Northern European descent and most prominent in North America among the Scotch-Irish. For people with metabolic iron disorders, controlling the intake of iron contributes to wellness and the prevention of such chronic diseases as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver disease, impotence, and depression.

The Hemochromatosis Cookbook is written specifically for those who suffer from such iron disorders. It has chapters on all of the traditional categories found in most cookbooks: appetizers, salads, fruits and vegetables, main courses and casseroles, breads and muffins, and desserts. In addition, The Hemochromatosis Cookbook is characterized by the following:

Easy-to-prepare, reasonably priced recipes that impede the body’s absorption of iron

Food values and tips suggesting substitutions for reduced fat, sodium, and sugar

Helpful menu planning for busy schedules, cooking for company, or cooking for two

Diet plans for a typical week, including meals that can be prepared ahead of time and frozen

A shopping checklist with reminders about iron content

A chart showing the iron contents of common foods and vitamin supplements

A general explanation of iron imbalances, such as hereditary hemochromatosis, acquired iron overload, and anemia

4 Stars good book to give cooking suggestions
found it helped lower my iron readings. Found out diet is all I needed at the high iron was not genetic.

4 Stars facts about iron, and recipes
I would have liked to see the tuna salad recipe on page 109. Page 109 has a duplicate of the potato salad recipe on page 108. I wrote the publisher and got another copy of potato salad.

Overall, the information is helpful and the recipes a good mixture of easy and more complicated. The nutrition breakdown for each one is very useful.
